Western Digital woes.

Not much to talk about on the personal front, but this needs to be shared.

I vaguely mentioned a little while ago that I got a new HDD. It's been great. It's been awesome. Until the following happens:

amen. I had a HDD crash in 2000, and lost a couple of months. Never again.

1Tb drive = $300.

3 x 500Gb drives = $330. Cheap RAID 5 card = $190.

If you're worried about HDD failure (and rightly so!), RAID is the only way to be sure, so spend the extra 50% on redundancy. Mirrored RAID would cost you less, at the expense of capacity.

Solid state is still stupidly expensive per Gb when compared to spinning metal, don't expect that to change dramatically anytime soon. Not a bad option for a laptop though (saves power/extends battery, very quiet), but paying for SSD as a mass storage solution will hurt badly.
