Well, a friend and I were driving in the mountains yesterday when we came across a middle-aged woman in a business skirt carrying a small tote bag... miles from anywhere. I think there's a big difference in having a "it's not my problem" additude, and going along with someone else's "it's not your problem" response.

Regardless, it sounds like you did the right thing.

...and yes, most people are shitty and self centered.

It's just that I think Japan has an overly large percentage of the "it's not my problem" type. Still, it may be that from my position as an "outsider looking in" that I notice it (among other things) more than when living in the States.
(For any of those reading who don't know me, I've been living in Japan for oh, about five or six years... I'm not just a tourist on a rant now :) )
