Baby Class, Week Three!

Jan 17, 2007 08:41

Last night, we learned:

Babies get sick. When they're sick, take them to the doctor. Newborns shouldn't get sick. If they do, take them to the doctor quickly.

Labor hurts. A lot.

I was torn from WoW for 3 hours (not including travel time) for THIS?

Next week we get to tour the hospital. At least we'll get to DO something.

Erm... Newborns, can, and often will, get sick. Taking them to the doctor is a good thing. Ask your doctor about acceptable first measures, though. Babies will often get a fever that will go away in a few hours with an appropriate dose of Children's Tylenol. There's a difference between your baby's immune system adapting to a normal sickness, and your baby being sick.

Breast feeding does wonders to help with the immune system, so give your wife lots of support in this area. One of the things they don't often tell new mothers is that breast feeding can be very painful at first, and your wife will probably need lots of encouragement. If she's having trouble producing milk, there are supplements she can take. You'll need to find the balance between helping her through what can be a painful experience the first few times, and helping her to not feel like a failure if she has trouble.

(Can you tell lots of my friends are having babies lately?)
