I surfed over to read the 'article' that instigated that whole thing. I think that Hendrix is WAY off the mark with his comments about webscabs taking away from people who are trying to make a living writing. It's funny, I just read something pointed to by Fripp about posting ones music for free. AND, there was a long discussion on the SynthSights list about giving away music and how it is then valueless. I have a really hard time seeing that point of view. Does he think that libraries will be the downfall of writers? We've taken out over 9000 books in the last 12 years, should we be considered scabs because we didn't pay for the books? Are we destroying the fabric of the "Music Business" but posting our music for free? I NEVER considered people who wrote freeware to be scabs. This is our art, our work, if we choose to share it for free, who the hell is he to call us scabs?

Hendrix's astonishingly stupid rant gets further raked over the coals here and here, btw. I haven't seen that much *facepalm*-ing by professional writers in a long while.

I think the best observation I've read about the whole sorry drama is that Hendrix is implying that all art is essentially interchangeable - that if you can get one thing for free your need is fulfilled and you won't turn around and pay for something else. The ignorance of actual human nature and reality that this shows is nothing short of mind-boggling.

He's also missing the fact that just because I could, say, download your NaNoMo novel, that it would keep me from going out and buying the latest Sandman.

If he'd really like to see what effect releasing something for free has on long term sales, he should take a good hard look at id Software (Doom, Quake, etc.)

He's presuming that art is replaceable. This isn't union labor where there are scabs waiting to take over a job and are just as qualified. It's art, goddamnit.

One thing I have to say, he's gotten lots of publicity and I'm sure there are lots of people who now know who he is, who didn't before. :)
