What I don't understand is why people give all that information in the first place. Just because Facebook asks, doesn't mean anybody has to answer. My account there wasn't even under my own name until I decided I wanted to reconnect with some people I know in my meat life.

FB may create the illusion of more privacy than is actually available. And if people are using it to network, they may start out by wanting more info on it than not, and then later realize that's not such a great idea. My guess would be there's a learning curve involved in that.
