Cross--Gen Question

Mar 09, 2009 14:06

Okay, it's my turn now.

I have been wondering about this for ages now and I want to hear what you all think.  If you have actual proof or evidence please feel free to share.

What exactly constitutes a Cross-Gen relationship?  I am only interested in the HP fandom by the way.

You see to me a 'generation' is an age gap wide enough to allow for the older ( Read more... )

No you haven't confused me you have in fact helped me to see a logical POV that just happens to be different from my own.

I also learned that Generation Y started in 1977 which I did not know previously and it makes me wonder how many people are listing their fic as cross-gen because of that fact? hmmm interesting...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts (hugs)

I agree 100%. I think the person has to be at LEAST like 18 (or perhaps 17 if we're talking wizarding laws) years older for it to be true cross-gen. I mean, I might have TECHNICALLY been able to have a child when I was twelve, but that's sort of warping my generation, I think.

In my opinion, the older party has to be old enough to be a non-underage parent to the younger party.

That's my line for you. :D

And I agree with you too.

Teddy/James II is not cross gen but Harry/Teddy or Harry/Scorpius most definitely is. Of course Harry/Teddy is blurring the line simply because according to unspoken fanfic law sex doesn't happen to under 18 year olds lol so Harry couldn't physically be Teddy's dad since he's not old enough.

Gah I am babbling again sorry.

I am as intrigued by this line drawing as you are. I can't wait to see what people say.

I think it's all very blurry. Generally, we were taught that a generation is ~20 years. So the parent rule is a good rule of thumb.

But - I'd call Harry/Tonks cross!gen. I'm not entirely sure why, but I class her with the other 'asults' in the Order, and thus of a different generation to Harry & co.

So what you're saying is that the lines get blurred mostly when the older character doesn't fit snuggly with in an era, leaving the interpretation up to the individual reader/writer?

If that is in fact what you're saying then I think that makes sense. At least a bit more sense then my brain was allowing before lol

Trio/Marauder - definite line
Trio/Epilogue - definite line
In between Charlie Weasley/Marauders - blurry

By trio I mean all the Hogwarts Students during Harry's school years. Maybe that is where some folk draw their lines? If they weren't at school together then you're a different generation because that! would make even more sense.

Sorry for thinking aloud on your comment but also thank you for your thoughts.

Yeah, i think you have it. Tonks just doesn't quite fit - she isn't Hogwarts Era, but she's not quite the Marauders Era either. Typical Tonks, refusing to be pigeon-holed!

you and i think of it in the same way. the older person would have to be old enough to fall in the "parent" category.

so harry/scorpius, draco/al, snape/harry, remus/ron, etc.

charlie/harry wouldn't be crossgen even though charlie's a few years older than harry. same with bill/hermione - they may be 5-10 years apart from each other but they're still part of the same generation.
