There are many different aspects to a person. In my head I've always kept the two biggest parts of myself separated - the thinker and the feeler, or the scientist and the human. "rescue, . . , giving, generosity, love" - are instinctual as well, aren't they. - even if you didn't say they weren't.
Yes, I agree, I didn't think of giving opposite examples because it was beside my point. But I wasn't trying to make out that instinct is inherently a bad thing.

Mating is often a negotiation, but sometimes it is not. I recently read about a species of flatworm which.. well, read it here.
Point is, rape is a combination of mating and violence, both of which are instinctual. I think it is counter-productive to certain social tendencies we also instinctually have, but it is not necessarily an aberration.
