Unbelievable images

I can scarcely believe some of the images I've been seeing on the TV screen over the last couple of days - and will no doubt continue to do so for a few more.

Queensland, in the north east of Australia, is suffering its worst floods in its history.  A huge amount of rain has been falling over the area for weeks.  Some areas are suffering their  ( Read more... )

OMG, that pic!!

I just couldn't believe those videos of the cars being washed away. The one where one bloke rushes to rescue his just in the nick of time! And it's dreadful there are people dying too. :( One of my friends is over there and it's very muddy, but thankfully not flooded. I think they need an Ark.

There's another picture on 9MSN of a fox standing on a floating rubber tyre!

One of my co-workers has family in Queensland. She said she wasn't sure whether all of them were OK. She wasn't at work today, so I won't know until tomorrow if she's heard any more.

It's just awful, and I've been watching on the news. It must be like what the folks in Hawaii go through, waiting for a slow creep of lava to reach your town after the volcano erupts.

You're absolutely right. The outcome is inevitable. I heard one comment on TV that the floods were like a train wreck in slow motion - it just keeps coming and there was nothing anyone could do about it.

My son Jared told me about the tsunami and I was just flabbergasted. So sad.

There was too much water trying to get through a relatively narrow space. The outcome was that it picked up the cars and washed them away, then leaving them stacked on top of each other when it subsided.

The worst part of the whole flood situation now is what they will find as the water subsides...

That is an amazing picture - and somehow very representative of the whole 'help your neighbour' thing that is going on.

It's happening up north, but we're still surrounded by it and sharing it. I feel so terribly, terribly sorry for the people whose homes are damaged, who have lost family and friends. :(

It's amazing to hear some of the stories of heroism and selflessness coming out now. It's the true Aussie spirit in action.

I think I heard on the News that 3/4 of Queensland has been affected. Now northern NSW is getting its "share"... When will it end?

It's going to take a LONG time for Qld to get back to normal. I shudder at the very thought of having that foul water washing through your home, soaking into carpets, furniture - every single thing you own. Yet one person I saw was actually happy as he sloshed through his lounge room in chest high water. He said it could have been worse... He had a second storey and had moved all of his furniture upstairs.

Hello from the Wash. D.C. area, Maewyn. I'm visiting my mum again.

What a time eastern Australia's been having. It sounds awful, although some of the stories are very inspiring. And I hope you aren't in your drought much longer on your side of the continent.

It's certainly a land of huge contrasts. The weather's beautiful here today - it's a nice, balmy 24C. It even sprinkled a little rain on me when I went out for my walk this morning. That's gone now. However, it'll be warming up again after the weekend...

I hope your Mum is alright.

I'm glad your weather has improved. A nice sprinkle will be good for your infant lawn. :)

My mom is o.k. I came back to try and get her some in home help. I didn't complete the process, my brother will take over. Perhaps we'll be getting someone to come in and do a little cleaning and her laundry (the machine is downstairs, which she can barely do, only with intense effort and pain), plus help a little with her bathing.

Smooches, Mechtild
