LJ Maintenance

Apr 09, 2011 10:03

For those who don't watch LJ Maintenance, they have made a post showing a world map of the locations of IP addresses involved in the recent DDoS attacks.  It's very widespread.  Thankfully there aren't any in Australia!

If anyone wants to check to see if their IP address is listed, check this link:  http://community.livejournal.com/lj_maintenance/

Thanks, Maewyn. Australia looks quite pristine! :) There must be some pretty bored people out there, or plain malicious.

I'm glad to see your area's clean as well!

I think most people affected are unaware that their computers are contributing to this attack. They may have clicked on a link to a site that leaves a trojan on their computer. So when the "bad guys" want to launch an attack on a site, they have access to a huge amount of computers that they use to continually bombard the site. This is why we can't access our journals when this is happening.

The best way to avoid being dragged into anything like this is to have good malware protection on your computer - and to run and update it frequently!

Thankfully, I'm married to a computer-savvy person. He runs the back-ups and checks the malware, and comes to my aid when, having opened a link to what should be a respectable site, a warning pops up, purportedly from Windows, saying my computer is at risk from [whatever they are saying is the virus] and to initiate a clean-up immediately: click here. Everytime they have been fake. Glen says people who panic and click them allow all kinds of nastiness into their computers.
