Maewyn, Oh my - this is so fabulous !! What kind of flower is thi s? It looks like it may be a Dracaena of some kind, because it looks similar to a pineapple top... It's very like a multi-petalled Clematis flower - only more so !!
It's beautiful, isn't it?! It is a rain forest cactus - as opposed to the desert cactus. It's an epiphyte, originating in South America. Similar to an orchid, it can be found growing in trees (though not a paraisite).
I think this is Epiphyllum crenatum - there are so many varieties! I'll be posting some more pictures of this flower soon.
Oh, beautiful, Maewyn! It's not scarlet in colour, but it looks like a "Scarlet" flower: you look at it and think, "Ah, lovely!", but its got the intricacy that makes it all the more interesting the closer and longer you look.
I actually do have a red-flowering variety of this plant, but *insert unmentionable word here* slugs and/or snails chewed through the base of the only bud. This particular plant hasn't flowered for several years, and I was really looking forward to seeing it (and of course taking pictures).
The stamens look so very delicate. I'll post some more pictures later!

I had a very happy birthday indeed, full of friends and family and food and drink and laughter. And three different banana cakes. :D
