Hi, guys!
So, on St. Patrick's Day, Matthieu and I popped down to NYC for the day, and I went to
Devachan for a specialist haircut for someone with curly hair. WARNING: what's behind the jump is very, very girly. Don't bother reading if you're not interested in curly hair care.
Here are the before and afters!

What happened: I went in, got sat down by Judy, and she asked me about what I wanted. I told her that I was at her disposal -- she was the expert -- but nothing too too too drastic. Losing some of the length was fine, but I still wanted to be able to put it back. She finger-combed my hair as she was cutting, which was very painful and ended up with me looking like a gigantic triangle-head, but hey, it worked! The cutting was not lock-by-lock, as I’ve heard it described; she certainly didn’t pick up my hair curl by curl and cut into the C or whatever. She just separated a bit from the rest and snipped off the end, sometimes ripping through the knots that were forming as she did so, which surprised me. Anyway, when she’d finished (it took maybe 20 minutes?), I was handed over to Gin, who did a no-poo and condition (doing the baptismal rinse thing, and giving me a scripted spiel as she went through, talking about the products and how to use them). She then scrunched in some Arc AnGEL, clipped my roots, and set me under the hood diffuser to dry. When it was bone-dry, she scrunched it out, Judy came back to admire and make one final snip of an adjustment, and that was that! (For interested parties, it was, in fact, $150 plus tip.)
My impressions: This is a really good haircut. I wasn’t overwhelmed like I halfway expected to be; the girl washing my hair clearly thought I was using silicone products in it, and the woman who cut my hair had never heard of flax seed gel (?!). Still, it’s a really good haircut. I think it’ll wear well, too. I really like the products -- the conditioner is great, and Arc AnGEL is fantastic. And for the first time in my life, I have second day hair that is worthy of being worn unabashedly down! Woo!
(Forgive the dark webcam shot -- this is via Ravelry's webcam, and was taken fairly late yesterday evening)
Overall: I’m really pleased. Not 100% blown away, but very pleased -- and my hair looks great. Now I just need to learn how to clip it up like Gin did! :)
Annnnnnnd, today I've given it a shot with my normal (read: cheap, chez-Target rather than salon-quality) haircare routine, and this is what I've ended up with:
Not too bad! I couldn't clip up the roots this morning, as I didn't leave myself enough time before lunch with Tina and Tom, but overall, I'm liking it. On Monday, I'm going to try to clip it, and will use the salon products to try to get it as close to Thursday's hair as possible.
So there you have it. New haircut ftw!
