081. So what makes you so special?

I'm still trying to collect my thought on spirit day and everything. For what I've seen there's been a lot of upset over how people are getting 'special treatment' and it's not fair on people who commit suicide for whatever other reason. I suppose in a way that is true, I mean other people commit suicide for plenty of other reasons but I don't like the idea that somehow one reason is better than another. I know it may seem that way but to me it feels like the act is more important than the reason and it's something that really shouldn't be done...

I don't know, I've never been there myself but people seem to be thinking of it too lightly. That people were just crying and complaining at how the world doesn't understand and getting called names. It wasn't like that at all. it isn't something you casually do on a whim for attention. Honestly, it's kind of terrifying.

I guess I keep trying to find reasons to justify supporting the cause but I'm just grasping at loose ends that I can't really hold on to too long. I mean, we want equal treatment right? So it would be more equal to support everyone who has been harassed in the same sort of way. Although, is it in the same way if it's not for the same reasons? Equality would be nice, but we weren't so equal to begin with, if that was the case we wouldn't be having this day at all. I guess with the way things are, if it was a day of equality heterosexism would still come out on top since it's the plain majority.

Maybe it's like... we have a lot of support for breast cancer, but we don't get the same amount of people yelling as loudly about how it's not fair that other types of cancer get the same amount of recognition and support. In fact if someone gets lung cancer instead of support and sympathy people might say it's their own fault, that they should have stopped smoking or say their friends should have stopped. Maybe chew them out for how it might affect their children and that they shouldn't have been so selfish.

Wait... did I just make a metaphor for sexuality by comparing it to cancer? I totally didn't mean to do that.

There have been a lot of people complaining that we shouldn't have been making such a fuss because these people weren't so special. Well, when you have them on the ground kicking them in the head it is kind of hard to feel special. But then again, what makes you so special? If you were born into the large majority you should be thankful, but the way I see it you're upset that suddenly it isn't all about you. Complain all you want about how people aren't giving the same attention to people who committed suicide because of 'real problems' but these are real problems, you just chose not to see it that way. Seriously, when was the last time a straight white male committed suicide because he was a straight white male. Okay, maybe that's a bad example since I'm sure it's probably happened somewhere in the world but it just wasn't publicized. So I guess now you want everyone to wear blue for a day in support.

Well, I guess that sounds fair.

Maybe.

I really don't know. I guess there are bits and pieces from both sides really. I feel bad about this, I really do. In the grand scheme of things, I'm really not so special. I mean, even before I even knew about gender and sexuality roles I was teased on in school and I didn't stand out much. Even now I'm in a bit of a minority although I'm still in a few majorities. Well, maybe I'm not special to the world but I know I'm special to quite a few people. So maybe that's enough.

Maybe.

But if I'm really not so special then what makes everyone else so special? I'm starting to think this whole thing's starting to turn into a contest of who can yell louder and make the most uneducated and uncaring statements.
