Just recently, some friends of ours called us from a trip out of state (maybe even out of the country) and asked if it was okay if the police dropped off their teenaged boy instead of keeping him at the station for a DUI. He'd been caught before he could do as much damage as your son's friend, but he's 17.
It was wrenching all the way around. The boy was absolutely humiliated by being dropped off at the door, handcuffed until the last moment. He was angry and distraught. We were simultaneously sorry for and mad at this kid. We love this kid. We sort of were responsible for him for about 24 hours until his parents could get their flight back. It felt a lot longer!
I'm just rambling, really, and giving empathetic vibes from far away. I hope you all catch up on sleep and get your car back quickly. Eat something yummy, too.
