“Thanks, Earla. You have a Merry Christmas.” Russ took the container and hurried to catch up with Clare.
She was standing on the sidewalk, gazing up at the sky. It was unusually clear, and even with the light pollution from the town, Russ could see hundreds of stars. “Wow.”
She smiled, but kept her face tilted upwards. “I know, isn’t it beautiful? It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old,” she sang softly, then exhaled deeply. “As much as it wears me out, I love Christmas. It always make me feel so full of hope.” She lowered her chin to see Russ watching her intently. You've got to think the whole town was rooting for them to get together, even Earla with her rhubarb pie. You've got their voices perfectly, too.
