Don't mind me, I'm just drooling over Henry Cavill here

So, I know it's the weekend and probably no one's around and I've been so absent from LJ hardly anyone remembers who I am or why I'm on your flist in the first place, and it just came out today (in the US; not sure about release dates elsewhere), but if anyone wants to talk about Man of Steel I am totally down for some of that action. :-)

I am debating whether or not to see this. I am a big Superman fan so I am very picky over how he's portrayed and I am thoroughly spoiled so I'm still trying to think about how I feel about the whole Zod thing.

But Henry Cavill is gorgeous, isn't he?

Yeah, my sister declined to see it because of the Zod thing. It's an interesting thing to consider. My take is that it'll never happen again because the circumstances in this situation made it impossible for Supes to do anything else, and it clearly traumatized him to do it. In some respects, it was also the... noble, I suppose, thing to do for Zod, based on what he said right before their final fight about his entire purpose for existing. (I'm not sure how extensive the spoilers you've read are, so I'm being deliberately vague on that point.) So, within the canon boundaries set by this particular movie, I think it works, but I can understand why it would upset people coming into it with a more solid footing in the broader Superman canon.

My only complaint about Henry Cavill is that he didn't spend enough time with his shirt off. Holy day-um. (Also, between Richard Armitage as Thorin and now Henry Cavill, this is like the Year of the Beard, and OMG I am in heaven.)

I'm spoiled for everything. And killing Zod isn't a deal-breaker for me but I just hate this general trend of either trying to redo the Christopher Reeve movies or trying to turn Superman into Batman. But I do like what I've heard about this movies portrayal of Lois and her relationship with Clark so I may check it out.

Ah, okay. Well, what really helped make Superman killing Zod (and one of the aspects of the Krypton worldbuilding in this movie that I absolutely loved - actually, I loved all the worldbuilding!) was what Zod said about his being bred/born for the specific purpose of fighting for Krypton and that he couldn't stop doing that, that he would continue doing it until he was dead. And yeah, okay, it was not exactly subtle, but it helped me see Superman's action as both necessary and ultimately a good thing for Zod. And it was clear that doing it broke Superman's heart, because at that point Zod was the last remaining Kryptonian.

I loved Amy Adams' Lois. If I didn't like any other aspect of this movie, I'd still love her portrayal and her part in this. It's not grrl power, thank goodness, it's girl-with-brains-and-moxie power.

I would absolutely recommend it, but I will add the caveat that it's got some pretty big flaws, the biggest (IMO) being action sequences that are over the top and way too long. My mother and I both loved it though, and we're big-time fans of the 1978 film (and I have a soft spot for Superman Returns). Without spoiling you too much, I think my favorite part is how it sets up the Clark Kent-Lois Lane-Superman relationship.

i only saw bits of a trailer, or more like, i heard them on the radio. it sounds like somethign akin to x-men, or is this about rea lsoldiers in an actual war? or is it based on a book, because that's what my brain keeps on telling me.

No, it's based on the Superman comic book superhero. There was an earlier Superman movie in 1978, starring Christopher Reeve, and then Superman Returns in 2006 with Brandon Routh (which was meant to be a sequel of sorts to Superman II), in addition to a TV series in the 1950s or something. This one's similar to the 1978 movie in that it's about Superman's origins.
