I finally finished something. Yes, it's a one shot...but I FINISHED SOMETHING *is excited* This randomly came to me earlier, and I just had to sit down and write it *despite my needing to finish a project >_>* But oh well, hope you enjoy. ^^
In the end....there was no warning. No explosions. No screaming. Just dead, all encompassing, silence.
The world did not end with a bang, it merely....ended. Michael and Lucifer were evenly matched, had been since the moment of their creation. In those last moments, they had simply…canceled each other out. Light had blended and became darkness, darkness had succumbed and became light. In those last moments, all sound was destroyed and all matter was obliterated.
All except for tiny stretches of land, generally the size of a small car, located in the middle of...well...nothing.
It was on one of these islands that Dean and Sam Winchester had been deposited the moment everything had ended. The law of their word had transcended both Michael and Lucifer’s existences. Dean and Sam were to be left alive…so they were.
They woke simultaneously, their entire beings worn and weary. They sat up in tandem, unaware of just how closely their movements mirrored each other. Their gazes met the landscape, or more correctly, lack of one, and the realization was such a heavy pressure in their chests that they merely stared for what might have been an eternity....given that time no longer had any meaning.
Sam was the first to move, sadness lifting as the finality of everything finally hit home. It was gone....everything was gone....but at least, at least that meant there was nothing left to fight for. At the end, it was him, it was him and Dean, and he couldn’t quite seem to bring himself to care that the rest of humanity was lost. There was no point.
Sam knew he was unable to stand up. He could feel it, somewhere deep in his marrow, that he was no longer capable of it. Instead, he merely crawled, crawled with what little strength he had left to get to Dean’s side. Dean looked at him as he approached, a small smile crossing his lips as he hoisted himself to a sitting position. There was a bit of a wall left, just behind him, and Dean used it to prop up his weight, given that his body was incapable of holding itself up anymore. Sam mirrored the action, right down to the small smile
And for the first time….in a very long time….there was nothing but love between Sam and Dean. There was no fear, no distrust, no anguish and pain. Just love. For the first time in years, Dean could look over at his brother and merely revel in the love that he felt for him, and Sam could do the same.
Maybe this whole apocalypse thing wasn’t so bad.
Sam motioned at Dean’s lap, a questioning look on his face. Dean nodded, a small smile and a “Of course you idiot” expression taking over his features. Sam bent down and put his head in Dean’s lap, just like when they were kids. Dean’s smile grew tenfold, and they sat, in complete silence, Dean carding his fingers gently through Sam’s hair.
They wouldn’t survive the now non-existent night. Dean could feel it. It was bone deep, a quieting of his being that told him death would be visiting soon. Sam felt it too, right down in his core, and neither was particularly bothered by the fact. Soon, they would both die.....but at least they’d die together.
Dean shifted to lie on the ground, his body unable to continue sitting. Sam watched him do so, a bit of sadness playing across his features at losing Dean’s touch. Dean motioned to his torso, beckoning Sam to join him. Sam’s smile returned as he crawled that last little bit to Dean. Dean wound his arms around his little brother for the last time.
“Dean...You think they’ll let us into heaven after all this?” The words were whispered, Sam’s throat unable to speak any louder.
Dean smiled into Sam’s hair. “I dunno Sammy....but wherever we go, we’re goin together.”
Sam smiled that soft little smile one last time, his body going lax in Dean’s grip, his final breath escaping him in one soft sigh.
“Sleep well Sammy, I’m right behind ya.”
Dean’s own eyes shut in slumber, his own last breath stuttering out only moments later.
