There really is no limit aside from money you're willing to spend. Sending SAT/ACT scores to colleges costs money, and then each application itself is anywhere from $50-$70, which is ridiculous but there you go.
Then there are the kids who manage to get fee waivers, who can send off any application for free. For them, it's just a matter of how many they want to apply to. I saw screenshots from a kid of their many Common App accounts- they'd applied to something like 40 schools with fee waivers, OMFG. D:
The Common Application website allows you to have 20 colleges per account, but they let you make multiple accounts, so.

Not to mention I have a really fucking unusual major - wildlife ecology - and would have to go to, oh, I dunno, MONTANA, to find it anywhere else.
Don't worry, out of that list, you will get accepted at least like ten billion times. :)

Most people apply to, at the most, around 8.
