Time keeping

Okay, this is how bad a geek I am. I have a ton of things written up for the game world that I'm running my players through on Sundays, but this was the worst indication that I have too much time on my hands. To be fair, I thought of this system well before I started this game. That's how sad I am :)

Time Keeping
The world makes one rotation around its sun (one year) in 365 days, each of which is 24 hours long, each hour consisting of 60 minutes and each minute consisting of 60 seconds. Subdivisions within that basic framework are weeks (7 days), months (28 days or 4 weeks) and seasons (13 weeks or 91 days). This means a year is 13 months long with an extra day that exists outside of the months called New Year’s Day (which is a day before the winter solstice).

Every four years an extra day is added after New Year’s Day, astrologers noting that this correction keeps the full moon occurring on the 28th of each month and the new moon occurring on the 14th. This extra day is called different things depending on the region of the world. In the Southern Principalities, it is called Io’s Wake, one of the few days sacred to both Bahamut and Tiamat. In the Northern Principalities, it is celebrated as Independence Day (though scholars know that the principalities didn’t actual separate on that day) and within Akhadell, it is Adrik’s Fall, for the dwarven king who ceded control of Akhadell to the Nerath Empire at its height. Within Varellia, it is celebrated as Dark Mari’s Eve, a sarcastic tribute to the Raven Queen involving dancing, drinking and merrymaking in an effort to ignore the cold of the Raven Queen’s winter and to keep her realm at bay as much as possible.

In Varellia, they use Varellian Standard (VS) as the basis of their year system. It counts the number of years that have occurred since the founding of the Kingdom of Varellia. Dates before that are given a negative value. In the Southern Principalities, they use “After Sundering” (AS) and “Before Sundering” (BS) as their system, counting from the year when the last Emperor of Nerath died. The Northern Principalities use the time since they left the Nerath Empire, denoting their dates as “Since Separation” (SS) and “Before Separation” (BS). Dukkharan uses the oldest system, using the date of their Empire’s foundation (though their empire-building days are behind them) for their dating system, calling it “Empire Foundation” (EF). Most of the eastern kingdoms use the Dukkharan system. It is important to know which system is being referenced since both “Before Separation” and “Before Sundering” use the same short form and many documents have contained erroneous dates (wrong by exactly 45 years) due to this confusion. Some scholars have attempted to remedy this, but no cohesive change to the systems has occurred.

First day of Winter: 1st day of the 1st Month
First day of Spring: 8th day of the 4th Month
First day of Summer: 15th day of the 7th Month
First day of Autumn: 22nd day of the 10th Month
