Most of you have probably figured these things out already but I thought it would be useful to post anyway.
Dementors feed on positive emotions and feelings. They seem to track people based on emotions, like a dog tracks someone based on smell - fear, especially. If you keep your emotions in check and try to keep your mind calm it should give you more of a chance to run away.
As soon as you notice your surroundings starting to get a bit darker and colder you should prepare yourself for an encounter with one. I have been using the Bluebell Flame charm as a warning system - if you put it in jars and place them along corners and hallways it's easier to tell when it's suddenly darker. Like a canary in a mine shaft, it lets you know that danger is near.
If you haven't run into one yet, the effects vary in strength depending on what you've lived through. Expect to re-experience the feelings of your worst memories. Try to remember that you've lived through them once, and you can overcome them again. That kind of positivity will help you cast a Patronus charm.
It took me days and days of practicing to get finally be able to cast the spell with any success, but it isn't impossible. It's very hard to cast one successfully in the presence of Dementors, but again it isn't impossible.
The best thing to do is run away, if you can. If you can't, try to think of your happiest memory. The ones that are most effective seem to be happy memories involving love.
When you think of one of the happiest moment in your life, it should fill you up. You should be able to feel it in your chest and under your skin. You should really feel it and be ready to burst with it.
Imagine the feeling directing itself into your wand arm, like a shaken bottle of soda just before you open it; pressure building up against the cap. When you cast the Patronus charm it's like opening the bottle and letting the soda shoot out, except instead of liquid it's happiness.
