Article about Hannah and Eastern States:
Hannah Wiest is a junior at Sunapee High School. She has been riding for eight years at Oak Hill Farm, training with Deb Wesoja and riding her horse, October Morning or Tober for short. Hannah occasionally takes lesson and is a member of 4-H. Recently, Hannah went to Eastern States for riding.
Hannah rode in a qualifying show for Sullivan country this past summer. Then, the county team went on to compete at the New Hampshire State Show, where Hannah placed sixth. The top twenty scores from New Hampshire went to Eastern States.
At Eastern States, Hannah participated in four classes. She placed sixth out of twenty riders in equitation, which is judge on how well one rides. In hunter under saddle, judged on if one’s horse would be good in a fox hunt, Hannah didn’t place. She earned fourth in both pleasure, judging how “pleasure” one’s horse is, and fitting and sportsmanship, judging how well turned out and clean one and one’s horse are and how well one shows the horse in hand.
Hannah feels that Eastern States was a good experience. The busy fair setting was a change. She thought it was cool to represent her state and show at the highest level of 4-H. Hannah was amazing by how little people know about horse. She made a number of friends and, overall, had a blast.
Hannah’s younger sister, Heidi, is her only family member who rides. Heidi is ten. She recently competed in her first horse show.
Pro-Kerry Editorial:
As you read this, you have most likely watched at least part of the three presidential debates and the one vice presidential debate. You have heard every argument from either side begging for another Kerry or Bush vote. Yet an undecided voter could still be torn between the two candidates. I’m only sixteen, unable to vote in the election, but I’d vote for Kerry if I had the chance.
This election will have a major impact on my life. New Supreme Court justices will most likely be appointed. President Bush has shown by his previous appointments that he would most likely choose a conservative judge. We need judges that will make fair decisions based on their interpretations of the constitution. If he has the change to appoint justices to the Supreme Court, Senator Kerry will choose people who share his view that overturning Row v. Wade would be unconstitutional. He will not use that as a litmus test, as President Bush has accused him. Quoting Kerry from Wednesday night’s debate, he will not appoint a judge who will, “undo a constitutional right, whether it's the First Amendment or the Fifth Amendment or some other right that's given under our courts today, or under the Constitution.” We need justices who will make decisions based on the constitution - these are the kinds of justices Kerry will appoint.
Abortion is another very important issue in this election. Decisions of the next president could overturn or support the legalization of abortion through Roe v. Wade. Before that decision, women could only receive abortions illegally which meant there were no health standards. It was a very dangerous process. Though I, like both Senator Kerry and President Bush, don’t support abortions, I believe the decision should be left to a woman, her doctor and other family and friends who would be affected. Abortion is an event that changes lives. It is not a decision for the government to make for an entire population. John Kerry supports women’s right to choose.
The war in Iraq is one of the biggest issues in this election. I think war is wrong, but we are involved in the Iraq war now and the issue is the correct way to leave Iraq without leaving the Iraqis with our mess. Kerry will get the international support we need to safely leave Iraq. He will make sure Iraqis are trained to be their own security personal and have other critical roles so the Iraqi people are not dependent on the US troops. Kerry will also help Iraqis to reconstruct their country. The fourth step in Kerry’s plan for Iraq is to ensure that they have the promised elections next year. The overall result of Kerry’s plan will include our troops beginning to leave Iraq next summer. They will leave the Iraq people with freedom and the ability to keep that freedom.
The appointment of Supreme Court justices, abortion and the war in Iraq are just three issues in the upcoming election. John Kerry is on the right side of all three issues, where President Bush will not even admit he might have made some mistakes. The future of our country is in your hands, the voters’ hands. I ask that you consider these issues and the many other issues discussed during this campaign. I am confident that you will understand why we must elect Senator Kerry as the next president.
