Think about the package of a filter. If I need SiO2-TiO2 pellets to filter elemental mercury vapor, then I need most surface area exposed to per unit volume in addition to the porous structure of the gel pellets. Or maybe the package of pills, then we could decrease the average package size, and save money on packaging. Science is never important unless you know how to use it.
