Anatomy Courses

I don't think I mentioned this before. My Anatomy professor is Scottish!!!! I had a picnic with Trent this morning, and as I was driving off campus, I saw him walking along the median carrying a large portfolio. As I drove past, I rolled down the window and yelled, "HI!!! :DDDD" and waved. He looked up and responded, "Hello, my dear ( Read more... )

Haha, I can definitely see where you're coming from. I didn't even notice that trend. Maybe it's because it's an anatomy course, so we were supposed to be focusing on muscles and bones? Although it would have been helpful if he had gone over that part for the girls.

You know, that old guy doesn't look old at all in your drawings. He must looks really good for his age! I am insanely, insanely jealous of you because you have access to such a course. I have always wanted to take like drawing classes where you have the nude models and the teacher there helping you along. I really need so much work on my anatomy. *Sigh*

Anyway, these are really nice. Steve has a pretty small waist for a guy. Hahaha. How do you start when you draw these? Do you do a little skeleton or a gesture drawing or do you just dive right in and start sketching what you see? Well, I mean, obviously you do that, but what is your process?

I start with a descending intercross, which is just a bunch of dots I make while not looking down at the paper. The dots are where I see reference points, like the shoulders, waist, width of the head, etc. The marks are connnected only with horizontal and vertical lines, because the eye doesn't perceive diagonal lines accuratly. It's kinda hard to describe... I was taught to do it in my second Drawing Fundamentals class last year. You can see it clearly in my first coupla sketches. This anatomy class really stresses starting with gesture drawings or a generalization of the skeleton, so you can see in the second half of my drawings that the descending intercross goes away almost entirely.
