Jack looked up from his paperwork when he heard footsteps entering his office. A smile spread over his face when he saw a paler than usual and hungover Ianto dressed impeccably as usual carefully carry a steaming cup of coffee and a white bag to him. Jack hastily cleared a space on his desk, then leaned back in his chair.

"Good morning," he greeted gleefully, chuckling at Ianto's grimace. "How're you feeling?"

"Seedy, thank you for asking, sir," Ianto replied, placing the blue and white striped mug and bag on Jack's desk. "And you?"

"Me? Oh I'm just dandy, thanks." Jack grinned like the cat who'd gotten the cream.

"Very good, sir." Ianto straightened up and turned to leave.

Jack frowned. "Ah, Ianto?" The younger man turned and lifted an eyebrow in question. "Forget something?"

Ianto frowned, and then lit up, reached into his inner pocket and pulled out some serviettes.

"Of course. So sorry, sir." He placed them on Jack's desk beside the bag of pastries. "Don't forget the conference call with Commander Collins in ten minutes," Ianto reminded him as he left with a smirk.

"Fuck Commander Collins," Jack grumbled, ripping open his bag of pastries. "I wanted a good morning kiss, not a serviette." He sighed and bit into the donut. It was a good donut though.

Ianto had been watching Jack all day. Every time Jack looked over, he caught Ianto blushing and looking away. It was adorable. Unnecessary, but adorable. Jack had tried to corner him by the coffee machine but he just stammered delightfully and held out a refilled cup of coffee before slipping away with a full tray of mugs. When Jack came up to see him in the Tourist Office, Ianto looked like he was about to relax for the first time that day, that was until a group of teenage girls came in and started flirting with him. Jack couldn't help but grin when that deer-in-headlights look came back over his face before he directed them to the nearest mall and politely ushered them outside. Jack was about to make a move when Gwen came racing upstairs calling out about a rift alert, Tosh and Owen on her heels. Ianto's face shut down as he was once again relegated to stay in house and watch the CCTV and monitor the alert signals. Before Jack could say anything Ianto had disappeared down the tunnel. Jack sighed and went to follow to retrieve his coat when he nearly ran Ianto over.

"Oh!" Jack exclaimed, stopping in his tracks.

"Your coat, sir," Ianto said, holding it out to help Jack into it. Before Jack moved away, he swore that Ianto's hands lingered on his shoulders, unnecessarily smoothing the wool blend. "Be careful."

"When am I not careful?" Jack asked, running out the door.

"Only every time you leave," Ianto mumbled, watching him leave before turning and running downstairs and manning Tosh's computers.

When they returned, empty handed, having helped the lost space craft find their correct co-ordinates for the solar system they were after, Jack found Ianto spreading out the lunches that had been delivered over the conference table. He noticed that Ianto wasn't eating, or staying.

“Where are you going?” Jack demanded, as Ianto was about to leave the room.

“Uh,” Ianto's eyes widened and he froze for a second. “I've eaten already sir,” he said, before seemingly getting himself collected again. “I have an errand to run. I'll return in an hour.”

Jack frowned. “Is this a Torchwood errand?”

“Of course, sir,” Ianto looked a little shifty but Jack nodded towards the door and Ianto took off.

Jack watched him leave, and sighed. Something was going on.

It was late afternoon when there was once again footsteps on the floor of Jack's office. He looked up and saw Gwen standing there.

“Gwen,” Jack sighed.

“You okay, Jack?” she asked, frowning.

“Of course. Why do you ask?”

She wandered over. “Oh no reason. Just, you seemed a little... disappointed today, that's all.”

Jack opened his mouth to tell Gwen what happened, but he caught a glimpse of Ianto at the coffee machine and shut his mouth again. He couldn't imagine the younger man would much appreciate having his personal business spread around the office like gossip - even if he couldn't remember it, which is obviously what happened. The connection that they had, the kisses they shared, had been the result of Ianto's drinking binge.

“No, I'm fine. Just tired. Late night last night doing reports,” Jack smiled. “What have you got planned for this evening?” he asked and sat back to listen as Gwen lit up and rambled on about some romantic evening that Rhys had planned for them. “Why don't you head off now and get ready then?”

“Really?” she asked, brightening.

“Sure. Tell Tosh and Owen and Ianto to head off too,” he said, moving back to focus on his paperwork again.

“Thanks Jack! See you tomorrow!” she called, running out of his office.

“Have fun,” he called out and sighed as he sat back in his chair, staring off at the wall. He didn't know how long he'd been lost in thoughts when he heard footsteps on the floor of his office again. He swung his chair around to face the doorway and was surprised to see Ianto standing there. “Thought I sent everyone home?”

Ianto shifted nervously as he walked in closer. “I know.”

“So what are you still doing here?”

“I, uh...” he sighed, and straightened up, looking at Jack. “I was, uh, I was thinking... well, wondering, hoping really, if you would like to have dinner? W-with me, I mean?”

Jack's smile spread over his face into the widest grin, showing his dimples. “You askin' me on a date, Mr Jones?”

Ianto blushed adorably and looked at his feet, before looking back up. “I-I guess yes, yes I am.”

Jack stood up and came over to stand in front of Ianto. “I would love to have dinner with you.”

Ianto breathed out in relief. “Okay. Good.”

Jack laughed, and reached out for Ianto's hips. “Ianto, how much of last night do you remember?”

Ianto winced. “Um, actually most of the day I thought I'd dreamt it, to be honest. It felt real, but...”

“You didn't want to make the assumption in case you were wrong?” Jack asked, pulling him closer.

“Something like that, yes,” Ianto nodded, his hands coming up to rest on Jack's arms. “And I did promise...”

“You did,” Jack agreed, nuzzling closer.

“Is that why you've been in a mood all day, Jack?” Ianto asked, pulling his head back. It was Jack's turn to look sheepish. “Jack!”

“What? I finally get to kiss you last night, and when you come in this morning it's like nothing happened! You think I'm not going to be in a mood when I'm a little disappointed?” Jack pouted, tightening his grip on Ianto's waist.

Ianto sighed. “Yes, well, there was no need to act like you were five and lost your favourite toy.”

“I did lose my favourite toy,” Jack muttered.

“Do you still want to go on that date or not? Because I want to date a man, not a child!” Ianto asked, straightening his back. There was something about Ianto when he had his confidence. It was hot!

“Oh, I'll show you just how much of a man I am,” Jack leered, and Ianto blushed. “Don't worry, Ianto... we'll take this one step at a time.”

Ianto nodded. “Thank you.” He swallowed. “I, uh, took the liberty of booking a table at the Italian restaurant just off the Plass for 6pm tonight.”

“The one you can't get into unless you book 2 months in advance?” Jack asked. Ianto nodded. “How'd you manage that?”

“Never you mind,” Ianto swatted at his shoulder.

Jack grinned. “Tosh, right?”

Ianto sighed. “It helps when your friend is a hacker.” Ianto pulled out of Jack's embrace and moved over to his coat rack, lifted his greatcoat from the hook and held it up for Jack to gracefully slip into. When Jack turned around, Ianto smoothed the lapels down, and then grabbed them and pulled him against his chest, kissing him, opening his mouth to deepen the kiss. Jack groaned at first in surprise, then in pleasure. Pulling back, Ianto smirked at Jack. “Time to go.”

Jack whimpered. “I'm no longer hungry.”

“Too bad, Jack. I don't put out on an empty stomach,” Ianto said, turning on his heel and heading for the door.

Jack's eyes widened and with a chuckle of glee, he rushed to catch up to man who kept surprising him at every turn.
