I recently decided to turn down a couple of performances because I was asked to do it for free. I have two reasons why I wont do them. The first being that if someone wants professional entertainment they should be able to pay for professional entertainment. If I do a show for free I lose money and since performing is my job I can't afford to lose ( Read more... )

If it's something you charge people for then yeah, you should charge it for everyone. UNLESS you decide to do it at an old folks home or something to be sweet. There's a difference between doing something and not getting paid for it, and doing something for free to entertain the less fortunate.

Although most High schoolers are unfortunate beings, lol, I don't think they can be considered a 'charity' or anything of the sort. They should pay. lol...pay...PAY.

why did you reply to my deleted post? isn't it obvious that the whole reason i deleted it was to rephrase that sentence about whipping things out? read my new one.
yeah i suppose highschool kids are cheap but that's partially because they have no skills thus they have no jobs. that's their fault too, actually.
it was to hot to keep my shirt on in badminton yesterday, but i apoligize for harming your virgin eyes.

"High school kids are way to cheap to spend 10 bucks on a T-shirt etc."
Wrong. I'M to cheap to spend 10 bucks on YOUR t-shirts, baby. If it's not in my size, why should I spend money on it? I would get it, though, if I had at least twenty bucks at the time so that I'd have cash left.
I think that being a proffesional means you should expect to get paid for whatever you do proffesionally. That's literally what it means. Doesn't it feel spectacular to have money? Especially when it's earned from something you do best? Always see the money first before you whip anything out.

ok . so its not wrong to expect some sort of compensation for your work. However, you must realize that you have to take a couple of hits in the balls (or wallet) before you can get the recognition you deserve. I can best compare this to bands. Right now you're a good band fresh out of the garage. Youve played a couple of gigs but not too many people have any idea of who you are. By demanding a certain amount of compensation you are limiting your exposure. Few people will book some one for whom they have never heard of and know wont bring bodies into their establishment ( ... )

You make some great points... and obviously you have more experience then me. But I ask another question... Lets say theoretical you want me to do one of your OC shows (note the sarcasm) wouldn't it be kind of skeevy of me to hide the fact that I performed at so and so high school for free when I was asking you for $125? I mean half of me wants to do the show and get my name out there but the other half feels like its kind of like shooting myself in the foot. I dont know... BTW, how does november 26th sound?
