What exactly ARE the drones, and how can the town brainwash people into being like them...?

Really, all we know is that they're completely bland and act as though they've always been here. As for the how... we don't know that either. There are a couple ways it can happen: one is temporary, and usually happens for causing a disturbance or doing something the town doesn't like. This type is usually accompanied by the presence of the police chief or the milkman. The other is more... permanent. That how... we don't know.
