It took several minutes for Don to convince the landlord of the motel to let them go. Afterwards, he walked quietly back to his SUV, his silent companion trailing alongside with a set look on her drawn face.

Megan climbed straight into the passenger seat next to him and there was no way he was going to argue with the woman who could do what he’d just witnessed twenty minutes ago.

Sighing, Don turned to face her. “I guess you’re angry.”

She responded after a long pause. Green eyes, filled with some type of wisdom he didn’t possess, glowered. “That would be an understatement for what I’m feeling.”

“Alright, I’m sorry,” his hand banged down on the steering wheel. “But what was I supposed to do? He went after my brother. My brother!”

Her voice rose sharply, finality in her tone. “And I’m sorry about that, Don, I really am. But Sylar has never killed someone who hasn’t possessed an ability he wanted or someone who tried to kill him first.”

“You sound like you’re defending him.”

Coldness seeped into her words, in contrast to the fire she was master of. “I’m not defending him, but I do know how he works a little bit better than you do. He’s far more intelligent than credited and has a gift for playing people. You played right into his hands by reacting and coming straight to him.”

Silence reigned again as both of them were simmering in their anger.

Finally, Megan sighed and jerked open the car door. “I don’t want to fight with you. I have to go find Noah and I think you should go home to your family before they get too worried. Explain things to them.”

Don didn’t get to reply, the door closed with a deafening sound.
