beautiful textures, but once I opened one in Photoshop Elements, it showed as an "index", not a background, and thus couldn't be used. The same happened to all the others. :(

Yes, that's the way they are. If you open them, select all, copy, and then paste them onto the image you want to use them on. Or go into your Patterns and load the pattern file. See step #4 here for instructions on using them in this manner. I hope that helps! :)
