And Tuvix--do you remember that episode where he was melded with Neelix? That was so much fun. (Fan fiction of the show on the show, really.) Fun to read yours! M.
Strangers all. Well, mostly. Haven't turned on a tv in my house for 6(?) years. I do watch movies on the computer occasionally, and I read, so there is that. As for fandoms, there is only one.
1. Hester Latterly, Lady Callandra Daviott, and Sir Oliver Rathbone from Anne Perry's Monk series. (Never liked Monk himself that much.) 2. Charlotte and Thomas Pitt from Anne Perry's Thomas Pitt series. 3. Brother Cadfael from Ellis Peter's Brother Cadfael series. 4. Tom Hiddleston's Loki. 5. Jude Law's Watson, from the Sherlock movies. 6. Leonard Nimoy's Spock. 7. Han Solo, Star Wars. 8. Aragorn, even before Viggo Mortensen brought him to the screen, but most certainly after! 9. Donna Noble, Captain Jack, Nine, and Ten, from Doctor Who. 10. Snape, Lupin, Minerva and Dobby, if I have to name only a few from The One Fandom. And one more because 1 and 2 are by the same author. 11. Anna Pigeon, for the Nevada Barr Anna Pigeon series.
ETA: And if I have to stick to ONE, it would be: 1. Hester 2. Charlotte 9. Donna 10. Snape
We haven't owned a tv in about 15 years, but Netflix has spoiled me. :)
Dobby! Yes. I should have included him on my short list of truly excellent, for-the-ages HP characters (as opposed to the others, who are simply excellent.)
This makes me very curious about Anne Perry!
I've always like Jude Law, but especially in the SH movies. *blushes* I think he looks a bit like me and my dad. Not sure what that says. M.
I think my father might have been good-looking when he was younger. And he doesn't *really* look like Jude Law--there's just something about the shape of his face and his eyes that reminds me of him (and a bit of myself, though heaven knows I am very ordinary looking).
Those series sound great, S! Making a note of the Thomas Pitt series especially. Was Monk simply not sketched well as a character? I really like the premise of rediscovering yourself after an accident and memory loss and realizing you weren't a very good person before.
Have you read the Maisie Dobbs mysteries? She's also a great character--a woman struggling with gender roles, independent-minded and complex. M.
LOL! It really is hard to pick just one character when there are often so many you like and care about. I gave up on including Harry Potter in my list of fandoms because I couldn't choose just one character. ;D
Oh my word, the WHOLE POINT of the HP series (an my involvement in HP fandom) is that the characters are so brilliantly, vividly drawn that you can't choose just one. It's the ultimate ensemble story, depsite the ostensible focus on Harry, Ron, and Hermione. :)
If you had to pick ten from HP, who would they be? That's a question I'll have to think about myself.... M>
Hmmmm.... Off the top of my head- Severus, Minerva, Remus, Luna, Neville, Pomona, Hermione, Harry, Hagrid, and Filius. Although, honestly, there are lots of others I like very much, too. :D
Although, honestly, there are lots of others I like very much, too. :D
My thoughts exactly. :) And there are characters I love writing and characters I love reading--as I typed out my own list, I wondered if folks even realized how much I enjoy Hermione in the books--I just tend to write about the adult-generation characters. Thanks! Fun to read this list. M.
As I was saying to Shadowycat above, the joy of HP is the endless list of genuinely memorable, vivid characters, and the real question for us (in HP fandom) should be "Who are your top ten HP characters?" (And even then we might have a had time cutting the list down.)
I think it's one reason this fandom still seems fresh to me--there are so many characters that all the stories will never be told. M.
I keep wanting to watch Broadchurch, largely for Olivia Coleman, but the bleakness of modern mystery shows - despite the fact that so many of them are excellent - really gets to me. I usually have no trouble separating fiction from reality, and I wish I were better at it in this respect. I think it's the visuals and the beautifully/painfully evoked atmosphere - they linger too heavily in my mind afterward.
Hmm, I've never even heard of Chewing Gum. I'll have to look it up.
I'm throwing together my answers to this meme (easy posting material, totally cheating here), and about 50% of my choices seem to be canons with amazing ensembles where I have a noted preference for one character but love all of them almost equally and don't know if I would cherish my favorite without the others.
You're completely right about Broadchurch, P. I started it in August when I was at home and not working much due to an oddly persistent stomach flu, and it was way too intense and disturbing--and then I couldn't stop watching, so I had to finish all three series. I had bad dreams about it, though I admired it enormously.
After that I watched Baby Animals in the Wild until I felt better. :)
Chewing Gum is great! It's awkwardly and painfully funny, and the characters are vivid in a way you don't see on tv very often. Highly recommended. Don't be put off by the over-the-top-ness--it's super thoughtful once you get into the swing of things.
I'm with you on the ensembles--in fact, a good ensemble is usually one of the reasons I like a book or a tv show. (And it's certainly the reason HP has been such a great fandom for so long for so many of us.) I'm looking forward to hearing about your favorites! M.
