Sora and I got a big EXPEDIT unit from Ikea - it's a five-by-five grid of cubbyholes that they make various baskets and boxes for. It works okay right now, but we do need to actually organize it at some point....
I asked a similar question not too long ago in my lj; you can find the post here.
I'm working on organizing right now, too, but have a restriction on buying stuff to organize it all. I personally like the idea of being able to see what I have, so I may end up having to go with shelves/shelving unit with clear totes. I have plans to utilize as much vertical space as possible when the time comes.
I'm using large ziploc bags for trims and notions and stuff, and totes for finished costumes. I don't know what I'd like to do and am still open for ideas, so I'm going to keep an eye on this post.
I use clear tubs to store most of my fabric, organized by colour/useage. That's the 'majority' of my stock. I also have a rolling closet from ikea that's my 'current project' space... Which i realize is now on sale- I paid more for it http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/60122471 It's a bit of a pain to put together, but I can store my fabrics and patterns and whatnot of what i'm working on in it, roll it where I need it, and turn it around when I'm hiding the 'mess'. It's been an absolute godsend for hatting, since I just keep my hat fabrics sorted on it by type, silks at the top, and I'm not digging for something every five minutes when I'm working.
