Summary: Two months since Dean went into a coma. Four hours since he woke up. One hour since Sam’s heart broke.
A/N: Finally an update. Only took like two years. My apologies to all who have been waiting for more and my thanks for sticking by this story and hanging in through the wait.
Dean sat down at the kitchen table, a plate of breakfast in front of him, the radio playing softly in the background. “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas had just finished playing. After a few minutes of commercials a piano began playing. About a minute later a male voice came through the speakers.
I know they say if you love somebody, you should set them free, so they say.
But it sure is hard to do. It sure is hard to do.
And I know they say if they don’t come back again, that it’s meant to be…
But those words ain’t pulling me through, ‘cause I’m still in love with you.
And I spend each day here waiting for a miracle.
But it’s just you and me going through the mill, climbing up a hill.
This is the long goodbye. Somebody tell me why:
Two lovers in love can’t make it, just what kind of love keeps breaking our hearts.
No matter how hard I try, you’re gonna make me cry.
Come on baby it’s over, let’s face it. All that’s happening here is a long goodbye.
As the song continued on, flashes started playing in Dean’s mind, like a trailer for an action movie. He saw scene after scene rapidly go through his mind. Things like Sam walking away from him to go to school, himself sitting in the Impala, pulled off to the side of the road as that same song played, tears streaming down his face, showing up at Bobby’s alone, depressed, and pregnant, him trying to kill himself, then finally him waking up in the hospital, both times, to find Sam there, waiting for Dean to come back to him.
When the flashes finally ended, Dean groaned, his head pounding. “Well that was as much fun as getting kicked in the jewels,” he muttered to himself before getting up to get the aspirin. He was both grateful and upset that Sam currently wasn’t home. He was taking Jamie to school. He was grateful because he didn’t want anyone to witness the barrel of fun he’d just experienced, but he was upset because he couldn’t ask Sam about anything he’d seen. He thought about calling his husband to find out where he was, but just as he reached for the phone, the doorbell rang. Dean slowly walked to the front door and opened it to find a short, plump woman standing there, a suitcase on the ground next to her. “Can I help you?”
“Hello sugar. My name’s Missouri. I know you don’t remember me, but I’ve known you for most of your life. I was a good friend of your father’s…and a good friend of yours until a few years ago.”
“What happened a few years ago?”
“Would you mind if I come in for this conversation? It might take a while and I don’t think either of us really wants to be standing for it.”
“Oh, yeah, of course,” Dean said as he moved aside. Missouri picked up her suitcase and entered the house. She put her belongings near the coat rack on the other side of the door and the two walked into the kitchen, where Missouri sat at the table while Dean poured them both some coffee. “So if we’re not friends anymore why are you here? What happened with us?”
“Nothing bad happened. We just had a difference of opinion. You stopped talking to your daddy and I didn’t. I think you boys felt betrayed by that.”
“I don’t talk to my dad? Is that why Sam didn’t say anything when I asked about our parents?”
“Probably. John’s a very sore point for Sam. I also know that he’s not going to be happy to see me, but I came here to help you.”
“How can you help me? Are you a shrink or something?”
“No, sugar. I’m a psychic. I can read minds, which is how I know that Sam is pulling in the driveway. I should go talk to him. I don’t want us to fight in front of you.”
“Are you going to be alright?” Dean asked, concern in his voice.
“I’ll be fine honey. That boy may be a giant, but I have changed his diapers. He does not scare me,” she replied as she stood and made her way to the front door. She opened it just as Sam reached the front steps. “Hello Sam.”
“What in the hell are you doing here?! I told you not to come! What did you say to Dean? I swear if you told him anything I will-”
“Samuel Winchester! Don’t you dare finish that thought! I will get a spoon! You know I would never do anything to harm you boys.”
“Except forgive and harbor the man who tried to kill Dean you mean.”
“Sam-”
“No! Don’t even think about defending that bastard to me! You have no idea what Dean was like. You have no idea what we went through. He was forced to take meds for months. He had nightmares. In the beginning he wouldn’t even let himself hold our son! I never want to hear that bastard’s name again!”
“You’re right. I don’t know what you boys went through. And I’m sorry I haven’t been here for you these past few years, but I’m here now. I’d like to help your brother, if I can.”
“Fine. Just avoid anything that has to do with him. I don’t know if Dean can handle it and he can’t go back on his meds until after he has the babies.”
“Fine. I’ll let those memories come back on their own then. I think it’s a wrong decision though. You weren’t with him last time when everything happened. You were only there for the aftermath. You’re here now and I think you’re both strong enough to deal with it together. However, I will honor your wishes.”
“Thank you. I guess if you’re gonna help Dean you want to stay here. Come on, I’ll show you to the guest room.

Later that afternoon:
Missouri was sitting in a chair next to the bed Dean was lying on as he meditated. “Now Dean, I want you to picture a wall of doors. Behind each door is a set of memories pertaining to a person or part of your life. Can you see the doors?”
“Yes. They have a lot of locks on them.”
“How many are there? Do they have anything besides the locks?”
“There are four. One has an S, one has a J, one has a B, and one has a carving of a double-barrel shotgun. I assume the S is for Sam, J for Jamie, B for Bobby, and I guess that gun has all the monsters behind it.”
“That’s a fair assumption. Now, which door has the most locks on it?”
“The shotgun door. Bobby has a lot of locks and Sam’s got a good amount too. Jamie has the least locks.”
“Then let’s concentrate on that door. Every day I want you to meditate and try to break through at least one lock. Once you have broken them all, open the door. Your memories specific to that person will be behind there.”
That’s exactly what Dean did. Every night before he went to sleep, he would lie in bed and meditate. It took him two weeks to undo all the locks on Jamie’s door, but when he did, he remembered his son. The first eight months of Jamie’s life were blurry and he didn’t remember much of that time, but everything else came back to him. Those memories were all he had to hold on to for a long time.
A/N: The song in the beginning of the chapter is “The Long Goodbye” by Ronan Keating. (And please don’t tell me that it’s not his song. I know he’s not the original singer, but his is the version I was using.)
