MSI

I don't get it. I read about people bemoaning the lost era of Scrabble of the past ten years. In reality, what we had was pretty unremarkable. I love the community that I belong to but we have been exceptionally static for the past decade. Aside maybe from Michael Tang's Causeway ambitions, this is the best thing that's happened to Scrabble since ( Read more... )

I agree wholeheartedly with this post. Bought my ticket last weekend and convinced Nigel P. to come as well.

I also think it's important to get our payments in early so that other potential entrants will see a stronger group of guaranteed entrants. When I see 3/4 of the entrants with stars next to their names, I'm always skeptical and assume that a significant portion will drop out. So to all those who haven't paid but are most likely attending, get your entries in ASAP!

It's far, far more important that you two both tell MSI and make sure they know why their participant pool isn't much larger. They need to know. Regardless of whatever effort people make, the pool could be so much bigger under better circumstances. If NASPA got involved and it were held on a better weekend (really almost any other weekend) and we got rid of Sam's February tournament, this could be the second or third biggest tournament of the year.

You can pay using this link: https://flipt.wufoo.com/forms/msi-lasvegas-scrabble-tourney-registrationpayment/

See you at the tourney! Also, hipmunk.com has some pretty cheap airfare from Portland to Vegas for Nationals weekend if you haven't bought your tickets yet.

I think that they're not doing too bad given that they essentially stared from scratch and they will only get better from here. We are not their only game in town (it's hard not to think that poker will constitute their major money-earner). The board was unimpressive but they tried to use that to gather some PR, and it did draw some attention. I suspect that this year's worlds will be a well-run event.

also their stated goal is to eventually have one even per month, four per year in north america, four in europe and four in asia...I believe that's available on their press release announcing the worlds this year.
