The thing people need to understand about the town called Hazard, before this story continues is how backward it was, and still is I guess. Think the most backward prejudice people, all gathered into one small town, with nothing better to do with their lives than judge and form stupid biased opinions without first getting to know all the facts and you have only a small idea of how bad Hazard was. But of course when Sharon Padalecki moved her son and herself there in the Summer of ’92, she had no way of knowing exactly what she was condemning her son to; if she had she would almost certainly have stayed and faced the demons that she and her son were running from in Texas.
Jared had never stood a chance, not there in that town. He was a quiet kid, thin and small for a ten year old. With eyes that seemed to look right into your very soul, they were that haunted. He was to any normal person a very, obviously traumatised child; a child who needed lots of love and support and kindness; a child who needed time to recover from what he had seen in his short life, but the people of Hazard were far from normal.
Sharon moved into a small house that she had bought in a nice enough area of town, and she kept herself to herself, got a job and went about raising the son she had left and praying she had done the right thing. She was told she was, all the doctors said so. Told her the fact that he wasn’t talking about what happened, the fact that he seemed to have completely blocked out the nightmare he had gone through was a good thing. They said that it was his way of dealing with it. He would be fine in time, would come out of himself again and be the happy bubbly child she had known before, all she had to do was get him away. So she did, she brought him to Hazard, it was a small town she thought, everyone knows everyone, and just what her little boy needed.
She was wrong.
