Prerequisite: Inflation

Recently, this has floating around the tubes. Brian commented on it, so I figured some economic background was in order. The article makes it sound as if hyperinflation is some random event that only tomfoolery can solve, but the causes of and solutions for hyperinflation are quite well understood.

Did Brazil actually stop printing the "old currency" at the same time that they started printing the new "real" currency?

Yeah. Once they switched currencies they only printed reals. They also did contractionary monetary (print less money) and fiscal (government spends less) policies as well as dealing with international trade stuff.
