I hate it soooo much when I lose something and the first person I tell is like "Well... where's the last place you had it?"
If I remembered that, I might know where it is... but I don't... argh... thanks for being no help at all and just making thing more frustating. You had to ask a stupid question.

while i understand your frustrations, I believe that all the person is trying to do is to get you to (a) calm down (because if you think about it, generally you get panicked and confused when you realize youve lost something) and (b) try to search your memory for it, because more than likely, if you were to calm down and retrace your path you would remember where it was you put them, or which places would be most likely.
