I was contemplating this just a little while ago, and as a musican that has experience being in a band, I have a bit of a different perspective than most people as to what truly makes a great band

The Clash's lyrics is what makes them awesome. I mean, look at their first album (or any other punk band's album for that matter). Three chords can get pretty repetative, and annoying. You might want to check out some of their later, experimental albums, that's when they really start to get musical.
Zeppelin is amazing, hands down, will never argue with that one. But to be honest, I can't listen to Cream for long periods of time without wanting to stab my iPod.
i completely get what you mean about being able to respect a band for being origional and talented but still not being able to really listen to their music. for me, that band is the doors (cue cathy and gabby having heart attacks).
i agreed pretty much with all the bands, besides the four i don't know, (zeppelin being my absolute favorite), but there were a few left out. they don't necessarilly fill all of your standards, but let us not forget ac/dc, U2, and the who. -abby
Hah--I second U2. Don't forget the Beatles and Pink Floyd. Radiohead too, though some might disagree with me... I listen to a lot of indie bands that haven't been around too long, like the New Pornographers and Belle and Sebastian. I guess time will tell how much of an impact these guys make on music.
Lyrics are what appeal to me most in a song, and that's why I like the Doors, because they're so poetic. But it's understandable why you might not like them.
I don't really like U2. At all. Sorry Jason.
P.S. The Clash are a truly great band. I will fight this to the death.
Bands as a whole can suck after a couple of records. I fail to keep up with bands anymore, just single songs. but oh you need some 80's on there. You need to put the Cars on that list. Kind of blane but who hates the cars? A great band is all about who doesn't hate the band rather than who likes the band. So in that case, Don Henley will NOT be on any list whatsoever.
I definately second the beatles, as predicted, but id also liek to add a feminine voice to the mix...janis joplin. so good...i really liek this post, becuase it really explians why i dont like a lot of the things i dont liek and why lots of people think/ assume i wont liek certain things and such. it all comes down to what you like...kudos for the post -cathy
beatles... right! see i would have said janis too, but she doesn't quite fit the band genre, unless you say janis joplin and big brother and the holding company (sanfransisco band whom she split with when her career started to take off) -abby
Haha good to see you guys at the commons. I haven't been in so long.
Less rock and roll, but still good--Arethra Franklin. I'm gettin into Alicia Keys lately, especially after her Grammy performance. More recent indie bands like the Arcade Fire and Stars have great female frontwomen too

But in the end, it's just a matter of opinion.
Good post though.
