I don't mean people who had their start in the 80's and rose to prominence in the 90's, I'm talking about bands that hit their prime in the 80's after starting either in the 80's or 70's. Preferably, this would be relating to bands or artists that made their ( Read more... )

Duran Duran.

Haha, I kid. Either The Smiths or Blondie for me. Would Bruce Springsteen be allowed? Because even though he did start in the 70s, Born In The U.S.A. came out in '85. So I'd probably say Springsteen.

i second bruce springstien as a good one. Would REM count as 80s or early 90s? I'm a big fan of theirs. I don't really know too much 80s wise.... not my favorite musical era.

Ah....they were around in the 1982 and got big in 1987; they pretty much lost their coolness and underground cred around the 90's. So you would have to consider them an 80's band.

influence vs. popularity gnarlykoolaid April 14 2005, 20:51:21 UTC
i dunno about the best overall but there were certainly some influential ones. like Joy Division infulenced alot of the punk/emo/indie bands today. Also, this is kind of a shot in the dark but Earth Wind and Fire theyre more 70's. Let me also remind you that arguably the best AC/DC and metal album of all time came out in 1980: Back in Black, yeah it gets in on a technicallity but its a sweet album. Devo too, Devo was sweet. i guess for me it matters more who was more influential than who was more popular. you dig? well thats about all there is to say on that one
later man...
