How many guitar players does it take to change a light bulb?

The answer is 12: One to change the bulb and 11 to say they could do it better (courtesy of http://www.mit.edu/~jcb/jokes/#guitar...kind of). Is it true? I'd say so, but I like to think that I'm the guitarist that changed the bulb, not bitched. I don't know where I'd be put ( Read more... )

I would have to say the drums, because they set the mood so well. I think, case in point, look at the opening of London Calling. The snare drum roll kills me every time. And people can say that a vocalist screaming is the utmost in passion, but its just words with out the runaway beat behind it. I'm sorry, hands down drums.

Get Give 'Em Enough Rope. That album has amazing drumming.

And as for Sameer's original question, vocalist.

But Ray Manzarek is definitely my favorite in the Doors.

yeah, I was hoping to incorporate most sit-down key-devices by saying keyboard/piano. There's a proper name, but I forgot what it is.

la guitarra... hands down. the guitar is the soul of any rock band.. it riffs and sings, keeps the beat, creates harmony, and takes your breath away. of course, a band can´t survive on just one instrument alone; all of the others blend with the guitar to create awesomeness, but a band just doesn´t cut it for me without amazing guitar. take that new band keane, por ejemplo: they have no guitar player, just drums, a piano, and a vocalist. They rock all right, I guess, but the one of two songs of theirs that i´ve heard, have left me impressed but wanting more. without the guitar, the substance just can´t be intense, knock-your-socks-off, mad rock and roll like it was always meant to be.

A band needs at least a vocalist and a guitar player.
Want a basic example? Tenacious D.
Two guys and two guitars.

Thus, in a way, you sort of have my answer.

you can do without vocals in my opinion...example allman brothers if were talking rock only here. take mountain jam, for example...amazing instrumentals with no vocals needed to conevey the awesomeness of the song. i do agree with abby about guitar being important, because it really provides a base for the band? does anyone get what i'm saying? but i couldn't pin the most important instrument...my favorite would have to be trumpet though. I love the brassy sound...everytime i hear a good trumpet solo (in steely dan or chicago if were going rock bands)i get chills...every time. I couldn't tell you why...just happens, and its not even due to impossibly hard solos or anything. In the beginning of Dirty Work (steely dan), theres this little trumpet interlude, and its just the tone and the sound...it just pulls everything together and meshes so well

I think we should forbid Chicago from ever being uttered

Thinking about it makes me shudder
