Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend

I have a 1-2 (not sure of the size exactly) carrat diamond now on my hand. It is flanked by 8 1/4 carrat diamonds. They are real diamonds. All perfect. Why you ask? Have I become engaged to someone who I never cared enough to tell you about? Did I just decide to waste thousands of dollars on an extraneous purchase ( Read more... )

I remember reading about that in Wired, and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. Not just because jewelry prices would suddenly become reasonable, btu also because there could be a million different applications on the technology side, too. I think the article mentioned something about diamond replacing silicon for semiconducting. Ah yes, here it is: The New Diamond Age

How much do you want to bet Intel will use the "diamonds are a girls best friend" song in their advertising (with a dead-sexy geek girl sporting the latest laptop) when they start shipping their diamond-based chips?

But, yeah, I'd be willing to bet that they can buy the rights to that song somewhere. I wonder who's going to produce the new diamond filled packaging (this has already been done and gives superior CTE effects). Hmmm...not sure if my stupid ex-company was working on that, although they should have been. Loosers. I haven't read about the replacement of diamonds for silicon, but I'm sure that that's on the horizon, too. Amusing, very amusing...

The other question is who will get there first, Intel, or its rival which is being considered "better and cheaper than Intel". (Intel is a nasty customer, so amusingly certainly suppliers tend to be overjoyed when another company gets 52% of the market share.)

True. AMD seems to be more innovative in their chip design, and is often one step ahead of Intel. But Intel still has the biggest mindshare, thanks to their partnerships and propensity for advertising.

But who knows. If AMD comes out with a diamond processor before Intel does, I could see Apple switching to them for their next batch of Macs. I wonder how severely they would be sued if they used the "Diamonds Inside" slogan. :)
