Help me spend my money:

I don't have a whole lot of money, but I've been thinking of treating myself. We have a slew of Mahler symphonies on our CD shelf, but I've been seriously considering getting a boxed set. I have the Bernstein recordings I want. My wife likes the old Cleveland horn sound but I don't think there's a box. I'm also not really into the Walter ( Read more... )

you can get the DVD's on amazon. i have watched them many times and also uploaded the audio onto my ipod. bernstein
devotes some time discussing mahler and the 9th-very powerful commentary. the lectures are very deep and complex, but i have found they bear repeated listenings and have enriched my
ability to appreciate classical music.

the current chailly and the haitink ones. nb lenny has two cycles. the -first - 60s recordings generally better regarded. the second set is more a collection of recordings with various orchestra. excepting 8 which he didn't redo before expiring - a live recording in berlin (I think) is used in that case.

solti is ok, in that rather driven, strident way that the cso always seems to have.

the sinopoli set is also well thought of.
