Why 8,601 diamonds? (Why 72 doe-eyed houri, for that matter?) Nothing succeeds like wretched excess, but this is ridulous.

Don't have to tell me that! My favourite part of the article is at the end when Glopnik concludes that if the piece goes on to become "Great Art," and the $100 mil turns out to have been worth it, then the piece itself would have failed in ridiculing over-the-top materialism.
