Workshop weekend :)

So :) I had a good weekend, but busy. I taught an intro to Khaleegy style on Saturday. Really, an intro to the women's party dance style. We talked about the thobe and how we still use it for most shows even though it is out-of-fashion at home parties right now. I am hoping that it comes back into style someday. I have high hopes because they still ( Read more... )

I love thobes and still want to get a decent one one day. SIGH there was one on Trade Me the other day that I didn't get - then, a Kiwi dancer said "Oh hai I have bits of one I was making, you can have it!" and she sent me it... but it's actually not thobeable if that makes sense, she's cut the neck hole in the wrong place and there is not enough fabric for sleeves either, not even with extreme patchworking. IT IS SO TRAGIC.

Oh no! I get my student and troupe thobes from Desert Boutique b/c they are super inexpensive, so if you just want one to work with, I can recommend those. I think they run around $35 USD. http://desertboutique.com/ Finding the really awesome ones always seems to be luck and timing....and I keep missing out on the best ones! There is a vendor here in the US who has really nicely embroidered ones (no beads, but very pretty). If you'd like, I'll see if I can find his contact info. His are more like $100-$150 USD, I think.

Are the Desert Boutique ones good and long? I have a homemade one but I hate it. IT IS NOT BEAUTIFUL. I have a long grape stole with gunmetal beading on it that remains earmarked for thobe manufacture if I can ever find a decent match to make the back and sleeves from... but other times I just think "OH HELL I SHOULD BUY ONE".

My friend Smiley is in Egypt and I'd like to get her to buy some things and send them - apparently she's seen awesome thobes there - but she's completely skint and her Egyptian boyfriend has gone insane so who knows what the chances are now. Sending cash etc seems to be difficult.

Yep! For the Desert Boutique ones, you get to tell them how tall you are/how long you want it (at least I did the last time I ordered). It looks like that field isn't on the page anymore, but I'd email them to tell them you are very tall and ask if it can be longer. There was no extra charge for mine. I am 6' tall (182 cm?) and they sent me one that drags the floor front and back. LOL My students are a lot shorter than me for the most part and have also received appropriate lengths, so it usually works out.

I am waiting for a costume from Egypt right now myself and things have been a little dicey due to the issues there right now, so it might be even harder than normal to send cash over there.

The stole sounds gorgeous - if you ever make it, post pics for sure!
