Maia opened her eyes slowly, she had a stabbing pain in her neck as she moved and her head felt like it was going to roll off if she moved any further. Ivanova woke up groggily at the sound of her name. She groaned, draping an arm across her eyes. "Why does my mouth always taste like old carpet in the morning?" she griped, then groaned again. "I shouldn't have gone back out to the beer store . . ."

Maia's gaze was still at the closed bedroom door. It was almost noon if Rose had come home she would have made an appearance by now. "She didn't come home." Maia said quietly.

That dragged Ivanova out of her funk. She sat up, reaching out for Maia. "I'm sorry."

Maia felt Susan's arms reaching out for her and she let herself go into them. "She said she would be back in time for tea." She whispered, almost in disbelief. "Did she come in and I was asleep?" Maia said, hope underlying what she was saying thinking maybe Rose had come in late and then left without waking them. That would be totally unlike Rose but maybe.
