Elaine lay very still as Ryan slept, her eyes closed as she listened to him.

But eventually, her eyes popped open and she stared at the ceiling.

Where could Spike and Beth be? What's happened to them?She can't forget what happened with Joe Manco, how he'd been preparing for his wedding and suddenly was just...taken

Somehow, even in his sleep he has some vague sense that Elaine is awake. Some part of his brain knows this but, even though he's always been a light sleeper, it takes a few moments for him to wake up.

"'Laine?"

"Hmm?" she answers, a little startled by his voice. She sounds a little weepy.

She rubs her eyes and sighs a little.

He rolls over, awake now, trying to make out her features in the darkness. "Is something wrong?"

"Spike and Beth are gone," she says softly. "Something isn't right."

They left...people always leave.
