Work / Humanity

I've been kind of playing, trying to get on with the developement or composition of a piece of music, using my bass guitars. I'm not an educated musician, just ears and fingers, or some such. Occasionally a voice, and a wordsmith who is cobbling some lyrics together. I've been playing around for maybe an hour or two to get something recorded that ( Read more... )

Well, Fred Engels always said that the ability to "work" - that is, make something with our own brains and muscles that never existed before - is the essence of being human. And that the worst thing about capitalism is that we have to sell our power to do this essentially human thing for a few meal tickets.

Well, what's really alienating me about alienated work is that one has to stay in the same box for years on end, because otherwise the meal tickets, and more essential in the climate zone that I'm in, the well-heated apartment may be gone in no time (btw., it's one of the most disturbing parts of the Hartz IV legislation that the authorities will kick you out of your apartment after a while, if the rent is above some abstract values for which you can't even rent a dog kennel here in Frankfurt).

In this country too, if they decide your house is too expensive they can tell you to move or no more unemployment money. And of course when Germany or the rest of Western Europe gets a mention in the Anglophone press, it's usually to say that the reason for high unemployment and social tension is that you give poor people and workers too much, and dreaming that Angela Merkel can be Germany's Thatcher. It's like people who were beaten as children arguing that everyone else should get a beating too.

The bizarre thing is, if the unemployed can't pay the move, and the renovation of the apartment, and what not, it is up to the authority to pay for it... which is why the legislators have written into the sick law, that the unemployed has to move with the help of friends. My old friend, the so-called Emperor of Textor, told the authorities that he has no friends to help him, so a crew of 1-EUR-job unemployed Hartzies had to do the job for him. Kind of, this was a circular arrangement - employment created by kicking another unemployed in the arse ( ... )
