There are days that I love to read the wank that's running through fandom, others not so much. today is one of those.....
Fandom wank is a funny thing, most of the time I can read it and shrug and say "whatever..." but this time I think I'm kinda mad. impertinence (sp?) made a post re: BNFs and what fandom should be. Well, pardon me for living but the graveyard just happens to be full.
I agree that no-name fans need support, I agree it would be nice if everyone who read a story and even kind of enjoyed it would make a comment. Yes, I'm just as guilty as the rest of you of reading the stuff by 'BNFs' and commenting with glee. Although, until I ran across
estrella30 and her babyfic, I hadn't commented on much in SPN, just kind of lurked and read. But I loved it and so I said so, and glory of glories, she responded to my comment (thanks for that BTW!) and made me feel welcome to interact with her and so I did. Then I started reading other stuff by other 'BNFs' that maybe she recced, or someone else I found did.
Here's what I figured out, these 'BNFs' are 'BNFs' because they write a lot and they write well. Yes there are other people out there who write equally well, but if you only post one or two stories per year (like me!) you're not going to get the polish on your work, the attention, word of mouth and therefore the comments like more prolific writers.
Yup, I'd like it if more people commented on my stuff when I got around to posting it, but hey, I'll say it myself, I'M NOT A GREAT WRITER!!! I write when I feel like it and I've got something I feel like playing with, otherwise, I'd rather read and save my commenting for stuff I've really enjoyed and authors who seem to appreciate my comments and invite me to become more involved.
Ok, now I'm descending into rambly repetition and I need a snack before bed.
Hugs to all, even if I don't know you. If I don't, say hi and maybe we can be friends and lurk around together!
