There came a point when you gave up and let the dirt have you. Nina had reached that point five minutes in the door, though she imagined the adults might try to stay clean a little longer. Her overalls had faded to a dull blue, dimmed by the amount of dust she had managed to take with her.
It had only been a few days, but Nina looked like she had managed to fall asleep in an ash bucket.
Besides, it was more fun to explore if you weren't worried about getting dirty. Currently she was on her knees, peering into the gloom under the piano. Dark places seemed like a good place to hide, so if someone was hiding something, maybe they were hiding it under the covers on everything. Though she couldn't imagine why they would be hiding, everyone was really nice. Something moved in the darkness beneath the cover and Nina squinted, leaning forward, half hidden by the heavy canvas. "Hello?"
But it was only one of the rats, vanishing almost as soon as she saw it.
