We vacationed from February 5th to February 12th 2014 in Cuba at the Memories Varadero resort.
Travel
We were lucky to be seated together without having to pay for it. It was because Keith filled a disability form on my behalf.
With Sunwing, you get champagne on the departure flight. It’s a little bit funny when it is 7 am.
We have nothing to complain about.
Arrival to the resort
When checking in at the resort, we were one of the first in line. We knew we had a special check in but we had to be told. The special check in included a drink and a sit down discussion of the amenities.
Lodging
Our suite was on the ground floor so no stair to climb. It was an ok suite except for the bathtub that was high to reach.
I found the mattress hard to sleep on.
Food and drinks
On the first night, Keith was unimpressed with the buffet as it had only rabbit, duck and seafood for meat. It got better and better as the week went by though.
Luckily we had à la carte choices. And because of our Diamond Club status, we had an extra 2 nights with speciality restaurant: Cuban, Lobster Dinner, Mexican and Japanese.
The first pina colada when we arrived at the resort was the best I had at the resort. But the best I had on the trip was one that was part of our excursion. It was made with fresh ingredients.
There was a guy on the beach selling drinks in pineapple. I had two of those and her tongue was tickly because of the acidity. But I liked it.
Beach
All of our days were spent at the beach. The sand was white but not as fine or clean as it could.
We had a special section reserved for the Diamond Club. Keith got up in the morning before I waked up to go reserve our seat. We would then go for breakfast and head to the beach to our saved spot.
We went snorkeling one day. I seemed to have forgotten how to snorkel or I wasn’t as confident. Keith alone went to explore the sea and had some findings.
Entertainment
We were not fans of the shows opting to head home and go to bed early. We did see one show, a tribute to Micheal Jackson. Keith was impressed.
Excursion
We took the bus to go visit the town of Varadero. There, we walked much. We were looking for the house of Al Capone. It was further out the town but we made it. It had been converted in a restaurant. We had a drink before returning. We made sure to take a bus and we stopped along the way. It was an outing of 4 hours.
We went on a tour of Havana. It took two hours to travel to the city. There, we visited Old Havana. We drove around the city and then went for lunch. We visited a market before heading back.
