I, a writing major, took a photography class in college in which every other student was an art major and the teacher assumed all his students already knew some basic art theories. I spent a lot of time talking to him after classes so I wouldn't drag things down for all the people who already knew these things.
I see. As far as I can imagine the most basic things are often stay ignored in classical art schools (both in Europe and Russia, I mean). Theachers think that beginners just have to have this _sense_, you know, of composition, good proportions, color schemes, etc. The results are obvious ; young artists use their intuition, nothing else (if they _have it). The thought itself of existing balanced rules and algorythmes doesn't seem to appear in their minds .
I learned more about constructing English sentences from reading fiction outside school on my own, not assigned reading, than my school English classes taught me, which is actually sad.

So I (and most of my teaching collegues as well) appreciate even tiny tries to do something useful for beginners.
