Gai was raised by his quiet asian father,a schoolteacher who ran a martial arts dojo on the side, and his VERY American out there mother, a phys ed teacher. He grew up with health and fitness at every turn, though his father ensured that his brains and body grew somewhat in tandem.
When Gai was younger he watched and listened. His father taught him many things, but the most important thing he taught young Gai was that one can only go as far as one is willing to go. Gai decided on his own that he would never give up at anything, and if he was forced to and no penalty was forthcoming,he would set his own penalty to learn from. This is how his training began,and how it continued.
Gai didn't start public school until he was eight years old and his homeschooling and determination quickly proved its worth as he outclassed his classmates during gym class,history and literature(after his first marking period grades he vowed to work harder at mathematics if it killed him!) By the time he reached Highschool,the only one that could stand up to his long nights of study and grueling weekenders was the one he dubbed his eternal rival. Hatake Kakashi. No matter what Gai did Kakashi was even with him, and even surpassed him at times with no more than a yawn. Gai could not see how someone who seemed to work so little could do so much. After a long and heartfelt talk with his father Gai realized the truth. Kakashi was a true genius, one who barely needed to study to keep an A average. Gai was furious, the joy of a victory was in earning it with the sweat of your body, the glory of it etched into your aching muscles...or head so you knew you'd earned it. He vowed that day to make Hatake Kakashi WORK for his place in the top students at the school. He was neck and neck with the other teen, then Kakashi moved leaving Gai with a hollow victory and the hope to see his rival once more
Once he graduated highschool, Gai went to college became a personal trainer. He works at a local gym where his minor in physical therapy gains him a few extra customers. He currently lives on his own in an apartment complex.
