So a week late I finally will post my Mucc report from the concert held at Otakon on August 5th 2006.
So for those of you that want the short version. Mucc was AMAZING. It was even better than I expected. For those that brave my full report, its all under the cut!
So I left for Pennsylvania on Friday to stay with my friend Everett for the night. He was the closest person I knew to the actual event, and was kind enough to give me sleeping space so I wouldn't have to pay for a hotel room. My friend Melody went with me to also visit with him and keep me company for at least this leg of the trip.
We arrive (after having to leave way later than I wanted because of having to wait on my paycheck) without any real incident and pretty much promptly pass out. The next morning I set out alone for the 4 hour drive to Baltimore. It was also pretty uneventful, but some of those areas out in the mountains had absolutely NO good radio stations. In one area all there was was a country station, and a bad "classics" from the 70's and 80's station.
Anyways, I finally arrive and look around for a parking spot for about 20 minutes, I finally seem to have found a spot, and a FREE spot at that, but as I am leaving my vehicle I was (luckily) informed by some passersby that the entire street was a tow away zone even though there were no signs where I was at. So I finally find a parking garage, 20 dollars for the day, but the sign says the lot is full. Amazingly though the person at the entrance lets me in anyways and I manage to find a spot.
So I park and start to walk out to the con, then realize I had left my keys in the car. Well damn it. So I walk back up to the 7th floor, get my keys (thank god I keep spares in my wallet) and off I go!
I get to the registration desk and YAY no line. I get my badge without much issue, and then ask what I do to get a ticket for the concert. During that time someone had been talking about being tired from just getting out of the car, and I had said I had driven all the way from Indiana, which got me a strange look and a few sympathetic words from the registration desk lady. She said I would have to hurry because all the tickets might be gone, but that if I couldn't get one I should check back with her. After much searching I manage to discover they our out of tickets, so I hurry back to the registration desk. The woman steps into the back room for a minute, and walks out with a ticket! I thank her profusely for about 5 minutes and then finally take a break to use the bathroom (I felt like my bladder was going to explode, but damn it those Mucc tickets were more important!)
So after a quick look at a clock and a map to figure out where the concert was supposed to take place, I call Becky in excitement to tell her of my harrowing tale of almost not getting a ticket.
After this I realize I only have a scant few hours before the concert starts, and the con map says the event takes place at "boar's head" but has no listing as to where this place is. After talking to a few con staffers I finally get the directions "walk down to the Hard Rock Cafe and take a left". Luckily it wasn't a very far walk, only maybe 4 or 5 blocks, because it was pretty damn hot.
So I am FINALLY there, and the line to get in is pretty long. >> and still 30 minutes until the door opens! Strangely enough while waiting in line I recognize a girl from Acen and from the D'espairs Ray concert who had worked at both of those events. We talk a bit and she compliments me on my Roji ura boku to kimi eh cosplay and finally the doors open!
Everyone files in, and after some ID checks (to see if you are 21 or not) I am let in with a large black X on each hand to signify I am under 21. The actual arena was a pretty good size, and I wasn't really all that far away. Maybe about 15 rows of people back, and luckily many were short. XD There was also an upper level jammed pack with people, but I wanted to be down where the mosh pit was likely to be.
Finally after another 40 minutes or so of waiting, the lights dim a bit and the first act walks out. She is a Japanese pop singer I don't really know all that much about, Nana Kitade. There is one thing I have to hand to her, despite the fact that most of the people in the audience could care less she was there on stage, she managed to be energetic and try and put on a good show. Her vocal quality wasn't bad, but she just isn't my style of music. After about 5 or 6 songs she leaves the stage, and then Mucc's road crew start setting up.
When the banner with their symbol was raised the entire audience broke out into a resounding cheer, which was then stifled by their intro song starting to play.
The intro song they used was "666" from their new album "6". Then about a minute later Miya steps out onto the stage, and it is a resounding cheer/yell from everyone. Then Satochi, and Yukke, and finally when Tatsurou takes the stage the cheering hits a fever pitch. When it dies down Mucc goes into their first song, they decide to start with something slower to set a somber mood.
After the first song they jump immediately into a hard and heavy song, and that is when everything becomes a blur. The entire set was amazing, mostly hard heavy things that get the entire audience jumping and moshing along. There were really only 2 or 3 other slower songs inbetween to give the audience and Mucc a much needed break from the chaos. XD I'll tell you though the most insane song of their main set was "Zetsubou". The mosh for that was crazy awesome.
Speaking of which, the audience was almost as awesome as the show itself. Although the mosh was hectic everyone looked out for eachother. If someone went down immediately people would stop to help them up, and we formed a protective ring of people around it so that those that didn't want to mosh wouldn't have to be involved. I was in the middle of it the entire time! By about 3/4 of the way through the show I had been pushed all the way up to the 3rd row!
So after the "RASUTO SONGU!" Mucc leaves the stage and I start screaming for the encore! About half the crowd went along with "ankore" with me, but the rest were yelling "one more song". After a few minutes of lots of hectic yelling and clapping, and me yelling at the top of my lungs every time it got quiet, Mucc took the stage again in their tour t-shirts. At that time Tatsurou took out an electronic dictionary and said a few words to the audience in English. I will try and say this exactly like he did.
"It is very hot and humid today." A resounding yes from the audience. "Are you excited?" cheers, "I am excited, this is exciting!" more cheers. Then he puts down the translator and they go into Dai Kirai. Just before the singing starts Tatsurou yells "Go eat a fucking baby and die!". That made me laugh so hard. Dai Kirai was awesome. The crowd went nuts and so did the band. After Dai Kirai Mucc played their real last song "no mo naki yume". After it was finally all over and Mucc had left the stage people began to gradually file out. With my ears ringing and my heart still pounding I talked to a few people around me. One who was wearing the Satochi version of the Roji ura boku to kimi e costume, and another girl who had the Bucktick B T on her cheek. All in all it was an awesome show, filled with almost every Mucc song that I wanted to hear. It was nearly an hour and a half long and I loved every second of it!
Unfortunately I realize now that the computer I am writing this on doesn't have Japanese language support, so I will post the set list in full when I get my own computer back online!
